Backyard Conservation: Citizen Science for Wildlife Warriors

Become an urban wildlife ambassador with crafts to enrich your garden, natural bird and bug attractants, and emergency rehab toolboxes. Learn to listen and pay attention to animals and plants around you through changing seasons.

Actions

  • Discover the ins and outs of wildlife rescue and how to care for sick, injured, and orphaned animals.
  • Foster biodiversity wherever you live; attract and house urban species in your backyard.
  • Observe, collect, and submit field data on iNaturalist, Seek, Merlin, and other online applications.

Accomplishments

  • Shut Your Trap: Set out fruits, nuts, and seeds in your front or backyard and silently observe what kinds of animals visit. Record what each chooses to eat over the span of a week.
  • Peep and Creep: Designate a street corner, park, or yard in your neighborhood and visit it every day for one week, recording every animal and plant you notice. Report on iNaturalist and present your findings.

“ClassDisco gives students a chance to conjure up a class of their own design with an instructor that matches their personality and interests. The bid function prompts users to come up with skills they’d like to sharpen, projects they want to work on, and books they’ve never read before. This capacity has drawn students who are not only eager but excited to learn. Allowing kids to choose what they want to pursue in the classroom can elicit incredible enthusiasm and creativity that’s wonderful to witness.”
